Backstory: Last of the Halifax DesBarres bloodline extant in the dominion, Wilfred Anthony Heathcliff DesBarres spends a good deal of his time gardening, attending teas with other theosophists, tracing genealogies, and partaking in amateur astronomy trying to fathom the endless depths of the cosmos. He is able to while away his days thusly thanks to the not inconsiderable funds left by generations of family going back to Quakers, British Empire Loyalists, various East and West Indies enterprises, beneficial dealings with large shipping interests, some African adventures, and favours done for the crown. Yet the family has, generation after generation, become smaller and smaller, fewer children surviving to see their majority. And those adults who survived to produce heirs produce fewer, rarely seeing grandchildren, and suffer extended periods of decline and madness should they live.

  • True Faith: When confronted by a creature of the mythos or other cosmic horrors, a Spiritualist can spend two actions (their whole turn) and make a Corruption Test. If the Test is successful, any mythos creatures that wish to attack the Spiritualist suffer Disadvantage. 
  • Tome Reader: You have spent years learning the sacred language of the arcane, allowing you to read power-laced words from magic Tomes. 
  • Wealthy: Gain Advantage on Tests related to obtaining gear or items, where your easy access to currency might aid you. You may also reroll a Wealth Test once per session if it is made with Disadvantage.
  • Familiar: For as long as you can remember, you have never truly been alone. Another spirit has linked itself to yours, accepting you as its friend and master.

Merrit Alban Beech, Half-Living (Dead Reign, Palladium Books)

Back to the character list Startlingly tall, skinny, pale, cool skin, Merritt appears as though he just died and no one bothered to tell him he shouldn't be walking around. Some wiseacres have said he looks a lot better now than he did in the office. Merritt's memories of before near-death are still there, but he doesn't remember being what you'd call happy. There are no moments he can point to and say, there, that was when he felt joy. But he's not sure if he's unhappy now or preferred whatever living hell he was consigned to previously.
