Writing Progress - April 2019

Current word counts for projects underway.

  • Hedge Wizard 1 (2,065 words) This isn't an origin story. That would have to begin with Daefydt den Wroekuden's childhood.  And even then the circumstances go back generations through the foundations of the Concordat, the reign of the sorcerer-priest god-kings and the long, slow fall of the Last Imperium.  This is just the couple of years prior to Daefydt entering service with the Obsidian Citadel.
  • Hedge Wizard 2 (58,379 words) Daefydt's first year or so in service to the Obsidian Citadel. Includes the expanded and revised version of the novella appearing in the It's A Living anthology plus one of the other novellas I wrote for the anthology but abandoned.
  • Shadow Of The Chimera (31,575 words) This was the first novella begun for the anthology and takes place immediately before Slighted Tower 1 and a few years after Hedge Wizard 2.
  • Nehleineh's Skein (1,860 words) A sudden idea I had a couple weeks ago about what Daefydt's consort did during Slighted Tower 1. Might not come to anything but I think the character has an interesting story.  Might be folded into Slighted Tower 1 but that one's pretty big already.
  • Slighted Tower 1 (102,344 words) This is the oldest work put on hold last year when I started thinking about the anthology.  This is the fourth or fifth version of the story with characters and plot vastly changed from the beginning.  There are three trunk novels of utterly unreadable clicheed garbage before this came into being.
  • Slighted Tower 2 (65,788) Naturally takes place after Slighted Tower 1 and I can't say much because that would spoil almost everything.

Merrit Alban Beech, Half-Living (Dead Reign, Palladium Books)

Back to the character list Startlingly tall, skinny, pale, cool skin, Merritt appears as though he just died and no one bothered to tell him he shouldn't be walking around. Some wiseacres have said he looks a lot better now than he did in the office. Merritt's memories of before near-death are still there, but he doesn't remember being what you'd call happy. There are no moments he can point to and say, there, that was when he felt joy. But he's not sure if he's unhappy now or preferred whatever living hell he was consigned to previously. He does know that he feels a visceral terror thinking about the other side of near-death or that anyone would become like him or complete the passage, so that's what he dedicates himself to preventing.
